Amazon Scam Alert: Fake AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 Sold as New?

A Redditor shows what appears to be a delidded AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 with an old Intel chip underneath, slipping through Amazon's return inspection.

Amazon Scam Alert: Fake AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 Sold as New?

Ever worried that the expensive CPU you ordered might not be what it seems? One Redditor's experience with an $889 AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 is giving us all a reason to double-check our packages.

The user shared images of two supposed Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 chips that look very different. The underside pin layout doesn't match, and the top is missing the capacitors that normally jut out from under the integrated heat spreader (IHS). For AMD fans, those missing caps are a dead giveaway—they're never bundled in the middle or on the underside of a genuine Ryzen chip.

Instead, the fake chip has all its surface-mount device (SMD) components clustered in the center of the underside, which is a hallmark of Intel chips. The likely scenario? Someone delidded a real Ryzen 9 9950X3D2, stuck an old Intel CPU under the Ryzen IHS, and returned it. The smudged text on top probably happened during the delidding process.

For less experienced buyers, the scam might be hard to spot. Intel chips have been rectangular for a while, but someone giving it a quick glance might just see the naming, the eight IHS jut-outs, and the square shape and assume it's fine. But to a trained eye, the differences are far from subtle.

This isn't the first time we've seen likely Amazon return scams—memory has been targeted before. But with the 9950X3D2 retailing for $889, this one stings more. Amazon can relist returned items as new if they pass inspection, which is exactly how something like this can slip through.

Hopefully, Amazon sorts this out for the Redditor. In the meantime, if you're buying high-end components, inspect them carefully. Have you ever received a fake or tampered part? Let us know in the comments.
