GTA 6's Leonida Will Have Over 170 Animal Species, Rockstar Confirms

Ever wonder what it'd be like to explore a virtual Florida teeming with wildlife? Rockstar Games has confirmed that GTA 6's open world will include over 170 animal species, and it sounds like the ecosystem is going to be seriously detailed.

According to a lengthy exclusive interview with Game Informer published on September 29, Rockstar aims to faithfully recreate Florida's natural environment in the fictional state of Leonida. That means you'll encounter not just native species but also the state's famous invasive ones—think green iguanas, feral cats, cane toads, nine-banded armadillos, and rhesus macaques. These creatures have become iconic parts of Florida's weird wildlife mix, and now they're coming to the game.

Michael Kane, Rockstar's associate director of animation, shared that the map will feature over 60 bird species and more than 30 land mammals, plus a ton of fish, reptiles, and other animals. You'll spot manatees, flamingos, pelicans, and the alligators already teased in trailers. "Florida has a diverse animal ecosystem, and we want to faithfully integrate it into Leonida's different environments, including urban and rural areas, inland and ocean waters, and wetlands like swamps and the Everglades," Kane said.

The team put a lot of research into making animals not just look right but move and animate realistically. They're bringing technology from the Red Dead Redemption series into GTA 6, with effects like iridescence, bioluminescence, translucency, and varied feathers. Fur and hair use a new simulation system that reacts to the environment and interactions—meaning dirt, matting, clumping, and wetness will all be physically simulated. "Fur will simulate interactions between people and animals, including environmental dirt, tangled and clumped hair, and wet states, while showing different colors and fur variations," Kane explained.

Animal tracking from Red Dead Redemption 2 also returns, with some animals classified as rare, discoverable, or legendary. You'll be able to find and track them as you explore Leonida. Hunting, which was a small feature in GTA 5, is also coming back in some form after being upgraded in RDR2. And if you're into underwater exploration, scuba diving is in the game, with plenty of marine life to see. Kane confirmed you'll encounter different species of sharks, whales, stingrays, sea turtles, and jellyfish, each with unique movement and behaviors.

Game Informer notes that Florida is jokingly called "America's Australia" because of its mix of native, exotic, and invasive species. Green iguanas are now as common as squirrels and pigeons in some areas, while Florida panthers, black bears, deer, wild boars, and turkeys also share the environment. The hardest-to-find legendary creatures? Rockstar isn't revealing their identities just yet.
