Ever wonder what happens when one of gaming's most mysterious creators switches sides? This week, Hideo Kojima took to his radio show to update fans on two upcoming games—OD and Physint—both now set to be published under Xbox Game Studios. And just like that, the console wars feel alive again, but this time Xbox is the one holding the cards.
Kojima kept things typically cryptic, saying he "doesn't want to reveal too much" but confirmed both projects are progressing as planned. Physint, a detective thriller, is described as "quite different" from Metal Gear. OD, his horror game, remains shrouded in mystery. For fans who've followed Kojima's every non-comment for years, this is classic—and it's exactly why they'll follow him from PS5 to Xbox.
The backstory here is key. Sony allegedly cancelled plans to publish Physint as a PS5 exclusive, reportedly due to budget concerns, missed deadlines, and the game not being truly exclusive. Xbox swooped in after Kojima pitched them instead. That turns Sony's loss into Xbox's gain, and it makes Xbox look like the hero in the eyes of Kojima loyalists.
But it's not just about one game. Xbox already had OD in its corner, so adding Physint doubles down on the partnership. And Xbox doesn't need to own Kojima Productions to benefit—it just needs to be the place where his games live. That's a shift from Xbox's usual playbook of massive acquisitions, like its $75 billion purchase of Activision Blizzard. This time, it's a strategic partnership, not a takeover.
Meanwhile, Sony is dealing with its own PR headaches. The company is moving toward a digital-only future, ceasing physical disc production as of 2028, which sparked a PSN blackout protest from angry PS5 owners. Add the Physint cancellation to the mix, and Sony's approval rating among players is taking a hit. Xbox, by contrast, gets to look virtuous while weathering its own storm—CEO Asha Sharma's ongoing "Xbox Reset" has led to divestments and studio closures like Ninja Theory and Undead Labs, plus mergers for Bethesda and Obsidian.
So why does this matter? Because Xbox is abandoning heavy M&A in favor of smart partnerships, and Kojima is the perfect companion for that ride. He's unpredictable, secretive, and endlessly fascinating—exactly the kind of creator who keeps fans engaged while corporate cogs turn in the background. As Xbox CEO says, working with PlayStation is still on the table after the Physint swap, but for now, the momentum is clearly with Xbox.
