Brandon Sanderson Wants Cytoverse Tabletop Games, But There's a Catch

Ever dreamed of rolling dice in the Cytoverse? You're not alone. Brandon Sanderson himself is totally open to the idea of tabletop adaptations for his Skyward series and the rest of the Cytoverse.

In a recent interview with IGN, Sanderson was asked if he's considered bringing the YA sci-fi universe to the tabletop. His answer? A resounding "I would love to!" But before you start planning your Spensa-themed character sheet, there's a big caveat.

"We've talked about it. However, I also want to be aware of asking my fans for too much," Sanderson told IGN. "There are a lot of great books out there, and a lot of great games. I don't want or need it to be all Brandon Sanderson all the time." He added that he and his team try to be "very deliberate and careful" about collaborations, only doing what will feel most exciting to fans.

So, no, a Cytoverse tabletop game isn't happening anytime soon. But that doesn't mean the door is closed forever. Sanderson has been deeply invested in tabletop adaptations of his Cosmere books, working with Brotherwise Games on standalone board games and a larger Cosmere TTRPG. His interest clearly extends beyond his most popular universe.

Meanwhile, the Cytoverse is growing in other ways. The release of Blightfall marks the first official book expansion into the Cytoverse, and a Skyward TV series is currently in the works. While the series isn't as popular as the Cosmere, it definitely has room to grow. If that TV show finds success on streaming, a tabletop collab seems like a natural next step. But don't hold your breath—the Mistborn movie is eyeing a 2031 release or later, and it's further along than Skyward.

In the meantime, Sanderson fans have plenty to look forward to. The Cosmere RPG is getting its Mistborn expansion in November, and a massive War for Roshar strategy game is also in development with Brotherwise. So if you love Sanderson's books and tabletop games, you're eating well.
