The Witcher 4 Targets 2028 Release as CDPR Teases Gamescom Surprises

Have you been patiently waiting to return to the Continent for another epic monster-slaying adventure? Well, you might want to get comfortable and settle in for a bit of a wait. CD Projekt Red has officially narrowed down the release timing for The Witcher 4, confirming that the highly anticipated RPG is aiming to launch sometime in 2028.

The update arrived via a newly released video setting the stage for this week's Gamescom event. If you were hoping for a major Witcher 4 reveal during the show, you will want to temper your expectations just a bit. CD Projekt Red confirmed there won't be any Witcher 4 news at Gamescom. Instead, the studio is using the showcase to highlight The Witcher 3's new Songs of the Past DLC, while teasing that they will have "a surprise or two to share" during livestreams scheduled throughout the event.

Even though the main game is still a few years out, the development effort behind it is massive. CD Projekt Red joint-CEO Michal Nowakowski revealed that more than 500 people are currently working on The Witcher 4. "This is our biggest, boldest, and most ambitious game to date," he stated.

Addressing the 2028 release timing, Nowakowski asked fans for patience while the team builds out the experience. "I know it's a bit of a wait, and you'd love to play it sooner--but let the team cook. It will be worth the wait," Nowakowski said. It is worth remembering that CD Projekt Red is currently "targeting" 2028, which means potential delays are always possible down the road, similar to what happened with both The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 prior to their launches.

Whenever The Witcher 4 does drop, it will serve as the opening chapter of a brand-new trilogy that will also include The Witcher 5 and The Witcher 6. CD Projekt Red plans to release all three of these mainline games within a six-year window, meaning the complete new trilogy could wrap up by 2034.

Beyond the upcoming trilogy and the Songs of the Past expansion for The Witcher 3, the studio has several other irons in the fire. CD Projekt Red teams are also actively working on Cyberpunk 2, a new multiplayer-focused The Witcher title, and a game developed in partnership with Scopely.

Are you happy to let the developers cook until 2028, and what kind of surprises are you hoping to see during the Gamescom streams? What do you think?
