Did you pick up Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve on day one? If so, you're part of history — because this one just became the fastest-selling game the series has ever seen.
Bandai Namco Entertainment announced that Ace Combat 8, which launched on October 2, has already blown past 1 million copies sold. That milestone came roughly seven days after release. According to the publisher, the record wasn't just powered by longtime fans who've stuck with the series for years — new players joined the fight too. The game is available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam, and with this latest success, the Ace Combat franchise's cumulative shipments have now topped 22 million units.
So who built this thing? The game was co-developed by Bandai Namco Studios and Bandai Namco Aces, the studio established in 2022, combining their tech and experience. And according to the official description, the team went hard on visual fidelity — not just the fighter jets and machines, but the wide-open environments too. Skies, seas, towns, mountains, and even characters moving around in real time are all rendered with high-quality, realistic visuals.
Story-wise, things are suitably dramatic. The Federation of Central Usea (FCU) gets blindsided by a lightning invasion from the Republic of Sotoa. Its main forces are wiped out, most of its territory is occupied, and surviving units are scattered. An old ship carrying refugees, the "Intrepid," has already pulled out of the fight. But aboard that ship, you — the player protagonist, on your very first sortie — are handed the title of "Wings of Theve." Here's the twist: that legendary ace status, named after the FCU capital of Theve and treated as a symbol of hope, isn't actually real. You'll carry that name anyway, taking off alongside three new companions to reclaim occupied land.
The game also leans into a cinematic first-person perspective, putting you on the ground before you're in the sky. The dev team used its in-house "Cloudly" engine to recreate roughly 10,000 square kilometers of sky, with layered cloud seas, contrails, and even sunlight reflecting off your cockpit canopy all designed as part of the experience.
Combat-wise, you'll use a variety of weapons to shoot down and destroy enemy aircraft and hardware, with real-world fighters recreated in near photo-real detail. There's also an online mode where your customizable avatar can enter lobbies supporting up to 100 players at once, hanging out with pilots from all over. The lobby packs facilities for acquiring and upgrading aircraft, plus classic games and more.
To mark the million-copy milestone, the official Ace Combat account thanked pilots worldwide and released a commemorative wallpaper, while the official website is offering a high-res desktop wallpaper of fan-favorite wingman Tasha for download. With the team promising continued updates, this one looks like it's just getting started. Will you be picking it up — or have you already logged your first sortie?
