The gaming world can't stop talking about Hideo Kojima and Sony supposedly going their separate ways — and now a well-known industry voice is asking why so many people seem eager to pile on.
Here's the backstory. Bloomberg reported that the Death Stranding series failed to hit PlayStation's profit targets, and that budget overruns on the mysterious project PHYSINT ultimately led to the partnership falling apart. Kojima Productions pushed back the very next night, saying the studio is in solid financial shape and that none of the reporting came from official or publicly verifiable sources. Their advice? Take it all with a grain of salt.
Enter Destin Legarie, a veteran games media figure who spent 13 years at IGN, including a stint as the outlet's video content strategy director. He took to social media to weigh in on the online firestorm surrounding the news.
"Feels like there's a whole lot of people out there desperate to find a reason to prove Kojima Productions is terrible," he said. "Kojima just said they're doing fine and are profitable. What is wrong with you people?"
His comments struck a chord. Plenty of players agreed with Legarie, arguing that as the story keeps snowballing, some of the criticism aimed at Kojima has drifted away from discussing actual business questions and turned into a simple hunt for reasons to hate.
That said, not everyone is ready to wave the whole thing off. Some fans point out that the end of the partnership still raises legitimate commercial questions — especially PlayStation's expectations for how Death Stranding would perform, plus the budget and planning behind PHYSINT. Those are the real sticking points, they argue. The problem is that right now, there just isn't enough public information to say definitively what went down.
So where do you land on all this? Is the internet being way too harsh on Kojima, or do the skeptics actually have a point worth hearing out? Drop your take in the comments — we're reading.
