Remember Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem? The ARPG that launched with a bang in 2020 but fizzled out with bugs, balance issues, and eventually had its servers shut down in 2024? Well, just when you thought the story was over, Wolcen Studio has dropped a bombshell: Wolcen 2 is coming.
That's right, the French developer, which seemed to have moved on after ending support for the original, has officially announced a sequel. And it's heading to Steam early access in 2027. Yeah, it's a bit of a wait, but hey, good things come to those who wait, right?
Now, you might be thinking, "Why should I care? The first game was a mess." Fair point. But here's the thing: Wolcen had a lot of potential. It had a gorgeous art style, a unique skill rotation system, and some really cool boss fights. It just stumbled on execution. So, with Wolcen 2, the studio has a chance to learn from its mistakes and deliver the ARPG we all hoped the original would be.
What do we know so far? Not much, honestly. The announcement is pretty thin on details. We know it's a sequel, it's coming to Steam early access in 2027, and presumably, it'll build on the foundation of the first game. But no gameplay footage, no story details, nothing else. It's a teaser in the truest sense.
Still, the fact that they're going back to the franchise after seemingly abandoning it is intriguing. It suggests the team has unfinished business with Wolcen. Maybe they feel they didn't do it justice the first time around. Or maybe they've got a killer idea that just needs the right tech to shine.
Either way, this is a bold move. Sequels to troubled games are risky. But if Wolcen Studio can pull it off, they could win back the trust of ARPG fans who were burned before. And with games like Diablo 4 and Path of Exile 2 dominating the genre, they'll need to bring their A-game.
So, are you excited about Wolcen 2? Or do you think this is a case of "fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me"? Let us know in the comments below!
