Sony Drops Kojima's Physint, Xbox Swoops In

Hideo Kojima's Physint is now an Xbox game after Sony canceled it. Fans are baffled, especially since Kojima Productions sits right across from Sony.

Sony Drops Kojima's Physint, Xbox Swoops In

Remember when Sony proudly introduced Hideo Kojima at E3 a decade ago to reveal Death Stranding? Fast forward to 2026, and that once-promising partnership has apparently fizzled out. Kojima's Metal Gear Solid spiritual successor, Physint, has found a new home at Xbox after Sony dropped it. Yeah, you read that right.

According to Kojima himself, Sony sent notice that it intended to cancel Physint. That led to several months of the project being shopped around before Microsoft stepped in with a publishing deal. It's a baffling move for Sony, especially as the company seems to be setting a new speedrunning record for jettisoning goodwill. And naturally, the internet had a field day with this divorce—pointing out that Kojima Productions is literally situated directly across the road from Sony. You can't make this stuff up!

Social media lit up with reactions, with fans trying to figure out what went wrong. Some joked about the awkward proximity, while others expressed frustration at Sony letting another high-profile project slip away. It's not every day you see a legendary creator's game jump ship to a rival platform, especially one that was once a PlayStation exclusive.

This marks the second game from Kojima Productions to be made in partnership with Xbox. The first is his upcoming horror game OD. But don't expect to see Physint for a long time. While the game is a return to Kojima's Metal Gear roots with its focus on stealth and espionage, he's also aiming to blur the lines between movies and video games. Back when Sony was still involved, Kojima mentioned it was several years away from release, and that timetable may have slipped further after all this drama.

So what does this mean for PlayStation fans hoping for another Kojima masterpiece? It's a tough pill to swallow, especially given the history. Sony's decision to drop Physint has left many scratching their heads, and it's yet another example of the company making moves that don't sit well with its community. Meanwhile, Xbox continues to bolster its portfolio with high-profile talent.

For now, we'll have to wait and see how Physint shapes up under Xbox. Given Kojima's track record, it's sure to be something special—just not on PlayStation. What do you think about Sony letting this one go? Will you be picking up Physint on Xbox when it eventually launches?
