Ever wonder what would've happened if David Martinez had somehow survived Night City? You're not alone — the creator of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners did too, and that what-if is quietly shaping season 2.
Bartosz Sztybor tells GamesRadar+ that the new season is in "constant dialogue" with season 1, even though it introduces a completely fresh cast. The spark came while he was writing the first season: "I remember while writing season 1, I had a thought: 'What if David made it? What if he didn't die?' He will become this celebrity Edgerunner in a few years," Sztybor says. But he quickly landed on a harsher truth: David was a flawed, tragic persona, and things wouldn't end well for him. That line of thinking gave birth to Weak, a character in season 2, and became the connective tissue between the two seasons.
So who is Weak? He's described as a veteran edgerunner, once at the very top of his game — and now living in the shadow of his former glory. In the English dub, he's voiced by Clancy Brown. If that sounds like a downer, well, that's kind of the point. Sztybor sums up the arc shift neatly: "In Edgerunners season 1, it's zero to hero. In Edgerunners season 2, it's hero to zero." Those were the core ideas for the new season, along with connecting it to the aftermath of season 1.
Don't expect a direct sequel, though. Season 2 was never going to pick up David and his crew's story after their dramatic showdown with the corpos at Arasaka. Sztybor explains that he and Studio Trigger started brainstorming and found other characters and other things to put in this season. His reasoning: Night City is a place full of stories, and he wanted to tell more of them. CD Projekt backed that up on its official blog with a blunt line — "David is dead. But Night City lives on." The blog also teased a logline: "In a city that thrives in the spotlight of violence, one question remains: when the world is blinded by spectacle, what extremes do you have to go to make your story matter?"
That theme of Night City's major players overshooting their sell-by date runs through the whole new season. It's a smart way to keep the spirit of season 1 alive without dragging a dead protagonist back into the spotlight. You get the same city, the same brutal stakes, and a new set of characters wrestling with what happens after the glory fades.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners season 2 lands on Netflix on October 20. While you wait, it's a good time to queue up some other anime — or rewatch season 1 and catch all the foreshadowing you missed.
Will you be tuning in for Weak's story when season 2 drops? What do you think about the hero-to-zero pivot?
