Riot Shield Returns in MW4 With Big Changes: Destructible, Placeable, and No Longer a Weapon

Remember the Riot Shield? The piece of equipment that could turn you into an unkillable turtle, much to everyone's frustration? Well, it's making a comeback in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, but it's had a serious makeover. The beta is live, and we're already seeing some big changes to this infamous tool.

First off, the Riot Shield is no longer a weapon. Instead, it's now a field upgrade. That means you don't have to sacrifice your primary or secondary to carry it. It's an extra bit of kit you can call in during a match. And that's not the only change.

The new shield is destructible. In the past, it could absorb bullets like a sponge, leading to some pretty campy gameplay. Now, it's durable enough to support a push or cover a retreat, but it will eventually break. According to Activision, this should encourage strategic use rather than just holding it up forever.

But wait, there's more. You can now plant the shield on the ground, creating your own portable cover anywhere on the map. Once it's planted, you can mount your weapon on it for improved stability. That's perfect for holding down a position or locking down an objective in modes like Domination or Hardpoint.

Offensively, the shield also has a new heavy melee attack that knocks enemies down, giving you some space in close quarters. So it's not just a defensive tool anymore; it can be used to push and create opportunities.

These changes are a direct response to the love-hate relationship players had with the old shield. Some loved the protection it offered, while others hated how it could stall games. By making it destructible and a field upgrade, Infinity Ward is trying to balance things out.

The MW4 beta is currently available for those who preordered, but an open beta runs from August 28 to September 1, and you don't need to preorder for that. The beta includes multiplayer, a campaign mission called 'Entrenched', and a sneak peek at the future of Warzone.
