Did you think Beyond Good and Evil 2 was dead and buried? Well, surprise—it's still kicking. Despite years of silence and plenty of speculation, the long-awaited sequel is apparently still in development, and we have a new name attached to it.
Rik Godwin, lead writer and associate narrative director at Ubisoft Bordeaux, announced on Bluesky that he's been working on Beyond Good & Evil 2 in a support/consultant role for the past few months. That's a pretty big deal, considering Ubisoft Bordeaux is best known for its work on Assassin's Creed Shadows: Claws of Awaji. So yeah, the game is real, and people are actually working on it.
Let's rewind a bit. Beyond Good and Evil 2 was first announced way back in 2008 with a teaser trailer showing Pey'j and Jade. It was supposed to be Ubisoft Montpellier's next big thing. Then... nothing. For nine years. Finally, at E3 2017, we got a proper trailer and a controversial collaboration with HitRecord. A year later, a gameplay presentation dropped, and after that? Radio silence.
In 2022, the game broke Duke Nukem Forever's record for longest development time. Ouch. Original director Michel Ancel left Ubisoft in 2020, and in 2023, creative director Emile Morel tragically passed away at just 40 years old. Fawzi Mesmar stepped in to fill the role. With all that turmoil, plus Ubisoft's recent cancellation of six projects, many assumed BG&E2 was quietly shelved.
But Ubisoft has previously confirmed that Beyond Good and Evil 2 was not among those cancelled titles and that it's still in development. Now, with Godwin's confirmation, we have even more reason to believe it's still alive—even if it's moving at a snail's pace.
So what does this mean for you? It means the dream isn't dead. The game might still see the light of day, though when that will be is anyone's guess. For now, we'll take any sign of life we can get.
What do you think? Are you still holding out hope for Beyond Good and Evil 2, or have you moved on? Let us know in the comments!
