Minecraft's First New Dimension in 15 Years Is Called The Sift

Did you ever think Minecraft would get a new dimension? After 15 years of Overworld, Nether, and End, Mojang is finally shaking things up. At Minecraft Live on Saturday, they revealed The Sift – a riotously pink dimension that's coming to both Bedrock and Java in 2027.

The Sift is unlike anything we've seen. Picture tufts of pink grass under a turquoise sky, with bunny-like creatures that walk instead of hop. That's the brief clip Mojang showed, and it's already got everyone talking. Since it's a whole new dimension, you can bet there'll be new mobs, blocks, and biomes to discover.

But here's the twist: you won't have to wait until 2027 to get a taste of The Sift. It's also appearing in Minecraft Dungeons 2 when that launches next week. According to Xbox Wire, the Dungeons 2 version features "shifting tides" that affect your character, plus hazardous new block types and both friendly and hostile mobs. Two biomes are named: Singer's Meadow, a verdant area where flora grows out of red sculk, and Carapace, a desert with strange blue walls and giant hollow fossils.

Just remember, that's the Dungeons 2 version – the main Minecraft version might be quite different. Mojang is staying tight-lipped about how you'll access The Sift and how it'll differ from the Dungeons 2 "expression" of it. It's a smart marketing move for Dungeons 2, though the game probably didn't need the boost.

The Sift wasn't the only new location announced. Minecraft is also getting a new biome called the ice caves. These subterranean areas appear sporadically beneath colder surface biomes in the Overworld. They come with a cool light-based mechanic: icicles hang from the ceilings, and if you place a torch beneath them, they'll detach. So you'll need to be careful where you put your light sources. Ice caves also feature light-emitting crystals, a new resource called calcite, and a new zombie variant called the frozen zombie. No release date yet, but testing is coming soon.

As for The Sift, we'll likely learn more about Minecraft's take on it once everyone's had their fill in Minecraft Dungeons 2. With a new dimension and a new biome on the horizon, it's an exciting time to be a Minecraft fan.
