AMD x Tmall AI Hackathon Wraps: The 'Second Wave' of AI Filmmaking

AI filmmaking just got its "second wave," and it crashed ashore in Aranya.

The second Wave AI Hackathon officially wrapped recently, closing out as a headline event of the 2026 Wave Film Week's industry track. If you've been watching the AI video space, this is one of those events worth paying attention to.

So who's behind it? The whole thing was title-sponsored by Tmall Black Box and AMD, and co-hosted by Wave Film Week, ARTACT, and Art You & Me C. It builds directly on China's first AI film hackathon, pushing deeper into where AI tech and visual art collide. Think of it less as a reboot and more as riding the momentum of round one.

And that's kind of the whole point. The event's core idea is that a "second wave" isn't about starting over. It's about catching the energy of the wave before it and surging even further. Tmall Black Box and AMD have been steadily investing in the AI creation space, aiming to lower the barrier so that every wild idea and every "let's try that again" breakthrough feels reachable for regular creators. The dream here is simple: anyone can make AI-powered films.

The competition also stepped things up on the judging side. A heavyweight panel of 18 cross-industry judges was assembled, including well-known film and TV figures like Wang Yuheng, Song Fangjin, and Qiu Sheng, alongside top AI experts and veteran content creators. They scored entries across four core dimensions: creative concept, cinematography, AI tech application, and overall production quality. That structure helped keep the whole thing professional, credible, and genuinely innovative.

To close it out, the organizers held a proper awards ceremony. AMD Greater China Sales Vice President Chao Yaxin and AMD Greater China Marketing Vice President Ji Zhaohui showed up in person to hand out honors to the winning teams across categories. They gave a big nod to the new generation of creators, praising their fresh thinking and skills, and encouraged young filmmakers to keep leaning on AI to unlock new possibilities in visual storytelling.

It's a solid sign of where things are heading. AI filmmaking is moving from niche experiment to something much bigger, and events like this are helping push it into the mainstream.
