Ever wondered what it'd be like to run a dairy farm in a survival game? Rust's October update just answered that with cows, sheep, and a whole lot of milk.
Facepunch Studios has added livestock to Rust, and it's not just about meat and leather. Cows and sheep now produce a variety of resources: dung, meat, bones, leather, milk (cows only), wool (sheep only), and yes, companionship if you're into that. There's a new economy around these herbivores. You can murder them for resources, or take them to a new Stable vendor and haggle over the sale price. The same vendor will buy wool from sheep. New fencing lets you build pens for your pals.
But the real star is milk. You can drink it, refrigerate it for four hours, and then "skim" it. Skimming gives you skimmed milk and cream. According to Facepunch, "Cream is a more powerful consumable." You can also add milk and cream to tea to buff its effects. So next time you're in a firefight, maybe chug some cream instead of a medkit?
Other features include breeding animals to chase "a god clone," just like plants. If you anger the NPC vendor by haggling too much, you'll have to wait 15 minutes before selling them anything else. Raw and spoiled meat can be used in a biofuel generator. And critters like squirrels, rabbits, frogs, and turtles have been added to the world.
Facepunch doesn't explain how to capture livestock, but says it "should all be pretty intuitive." So go out there and lasso yourself a cow. The update also adds necks to s&box, because why not.
There's plenty more in the October update, but we covered the best bits. What do you think? Will you be starting a dairy farm in Rust?
