GTA 6's Leonida Gets Dynamic Weather: Hurricanes, Rainbows & Puddles

Ever wondered what it'd be like to dodge a hurricane while causing chaos in Vice City? Rockstar just pulled back the curtain on GTA 6's Leonida, and the weather system sounds absolutely wild.

In a Game Informer cover story, Rockstar confirmed that Leonida isn't just the biggest map in the series—it's also getting a fully rebuilt dynamic climate system. Vice President of Lighting and Rendering Owen Shepherd explained, "We rebuilt the weather system to make everything more localized and persistent." That means you could be standing in sunshine while a massive storm rages in the distance. The new dynamic cloud system moves across the map, bringing everything from clear winter skies to towering cumulonimbus clouds with scattered lightning.

But it's not just about what falls from the sky. Rain doesn't just vanish when it stops—wet areas stay damp, puddles linger, and if the light hits right, you'll see rainbows. The wind system is just as detailed, factoring in sea breezes after sunset, thermal updrafts, and airflow blocked by buildings. You'll see hair and debris swirling on rooftops, ripples on water, and even swamp grass bending in the breeze. Shepherd described how heavy clouds, strong winds, and lots of rain make everything feel soaked: water streaming off roof edges and streetlights, thunder rumbling between clouds, and lightning dramatically lighting up the sky. Rockstar hasn't said how often tropical storms or hurricanes will hit, or if they'll affect the story, but they're definitely part of the dynamic world.

Leonida is made up of six main regions: Vice City, Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga National Park. Vice City is the centerpiece—a modern-day Miami with Art Deco architecture, congested roads, beaches, and a busy cruise port. Traffic jams can even make police chases harder. The Leonida Keys is where protagonist Jason Duval works for local drug smugglers. Grassrivers is GTA 6's version of the Everglades, full of reptiles and unfriendly outdoorsmen. Port Gellhorn shows the rundown side of Florida tourism with abandoned attractions and cheap motels. Ambrosia is the industrial heartland, dominated by factories and a biker gang. Mount Kalaga National Park brings rural Georgia-Florida border culture with wildlife and natural landscapes.

Rockstar North co-studio head Aaron Garbut said Leonida is "significantly larger" than anything they've done before—about twice the size of GTA 5—but the focus is on density, detail, and interactivity. "We're obsessed with every part—rooftops, alleys, interiors," he said. The team drew inspiration from Panama City, Jacksonville, Ocala, and smaller rural towns, studying logging industries and deforestation areas.

Fast travel is getting an upgrade too. You can hail rideshares, and other passengers might be inside—you can eavesdrop on their conversations or scroll Snapmatic on your phone. Since Jason and Lucia are on the run, they can't post on social media themselves. Heists offer choices: split up or stick together, go loud or quiet, and police responses will differ. If one protagonist gets fully taken down during a chase, the mission fails. Car theft is more complex—high-end vehicles need specific tools and might have trackers. You can check a car's value and security via the WAiNK App, and selling stolen cars requires finding a fence.

NPCs are the most diverse and detailed yet, with varied body types, skin details like freckles and moles, and clothing that changes based on region and lifestyle. Rockstar built its largest-ever range of clothing and accessories, factoring in materials, colors, patterns, brands, dirt, and wear. Tattoos, hairstyles, and grooming also reflect different communities. As Garbut put it, "This time we reversed course—detail, scope, breadth, scale, interactivity, and density all went up."

With all this detail, GTA 6 is shaping up to be a living, breathing world. What part of Leonida are you most excited to explore? Will you be picking this up on day one?
