GTA 6 Wanted System: Lose Cops Like a Hit-and-Run

Rockstar reveals GTA 6's evolved wanted level system, where you can escape cops by changing clothes, splitting up, or blending in—encouraging a hit-and-run style of play.

Ever wish you could ditch the cops in GTA without just outrunning a glowing red circle on the map? Well, Rockstar has heard you. In a recent interview with IGN, head of development Rob Nelson spilled the beans on how GTA 6's wanted system is getting a major overhaul, and it's all about giving you options.

During a 30-minute gameplay demo, Nelson showed off a scenario where Lucia, one of the game's protagonists, gets into a scuffle with an NPC. Dispatch is called, and a one-star wanted level pops up. But instead of just fleeing the area, you can now use a variety of tactics to shake the law. "As much as possible, we tried to design the game so that you have options," Nelson said. "Things can escalate quite quickly if you want them to, or people who don't want to escalate can try to avoid it."

So what are these options? For starters, you can change your appearance. Nelson explained that if you commit a crime and run before the cops arrive, you're generally fine—as long as you don't start shooting. But if you do attract heat, you can duck into a clothing store, grab a new outfit, or even put on a pair of glasses and a baseball hat. The police will remember what you were wearing, so a full wardrobe change might be necessary. If Jason and Lucia are together, you can also split up to throw them off your scent.

"We're really trying to encourage this hit-and-run style of gameplay," Nelson said. That means you can still go on a chaotic rampage if you want—Rockstar isn't taking that away—but the game won't make you feel all-powerful like GTA 5 sometimes did. The new heat system tracks your appearance and vehicle, so if you're driving a stolen car, you'll need to ditch it or call your personal vehicle, which conveniently has changes of outfits in the trunk.

The demo also highlighted how NPC interactions have evolved. You can eavesdrop on conversations, follow people around, and even get called out for being too nosy. These interactions can escalate into full-blown fights, but they can also be handled in multiple ways. It's all part of Rockstar's goal to support the narrative of a couple on the run. "We have tried to make the systems and the design support our narrative when and wherever possible," Nelson said.

Of course, this is still GTA, so you can absolutely cause untold chaos and murder hundreds of cops if that's your thing. But doing so will come with significantly more variables, and the cops will be smarter about tracking you. The idea of dashing through alleys or blending into a crowd in a random storefront sounds like a thrilling cat-and-mouse game that keeps you on your toes.

GTA 6 launches on November 19 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. According to reports, it's already close to 6 million pre-orders more than a month before launch. Will you be trying the hit-and-run approach, or are you going full chaos mode? Let us know in the comments!
