Are you a Game Pass subscriber hoping to dive into Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 on day one? Bad news: you'll need to buy it outright when it launches on October 23.
Activision made it crystal clear in a new blog post right before the game's campaign early access kicks off on October 16. The publisher has been warning about this for months, so the blog post is just the latest reminder. If you want to play MW4 at release, you'll have to purchase it. The base edition costs $70, while the Vault edition will set you back $100. There's no Game Pass shortcut this time.
So when can you finally play MW4 through Game Pass? According to Activision, it'll arrive on the service at some point at the end of next year. That means the game will be a standalone purchase for about a year before hitting the subscription catalog. It's a "windowed" approach, similar to how some other big titles handle their release strategies.
Why the change? 2024's Black Ops 6 was the first Call of Duty to launch directly into Game Pass, and Black Ops 7 followed suit in 2025. But earlier this year, Microsoft announced that new Call of Duty titles would no longer debut on Game Pass. That announcement came alongside a price cut for the subscription service. Microsoft never gave an explicit reason, but it could be tied to lost sales. Reports suggested Black Ops 6's Game Pass launch cost Microsoft hundreds of millions in revenue. That figure has been debated and doesn't tell the whole story, but there was clearly a financial impact Microsoft is responding to.
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma is leading a "reset" of the Xbox business, and pulling new Call of Duty games from Game Pass is part of that strategy. She's also looking to revive Xbox console exclusives, even considering a nuclear option. So this move fits into a broader shift for the platform.
What if you're a Game Pass Ultimate subscriber itching for some Call of Duty right now? You're not completely out of luck. The catalog still includes plenty of older entries: Black Ops 7, Black Ops 6, Modern Warfare 3, WW2, Vanguard, Black Ops Cold War, Modern Warfare (2019), and Modern Warfare II (2022). So you can get your fix while you wait for MW4 to join the lineup.
