Black Myth: Wukong just keeps climbing. According to a report from CCTV, China's state broadcaster, Game Science's action RPG has now sold over 30 million copies worldwide.
That's a massive number, and CCTV didn't just drop it as a stat — the outlet framed the game as a flagship example of Chinese culture reaching global audiences. The report looked at how Chinese content across several mediums is finding fans abroad in increasingly diverse forms.
It's not just games, either. The same report noted that Chinese web literature has around 352 million overseas users, showing that appetite for Chinese-made stories stretches well beyond gaming.
Micro-dramas are part of the picture too. Chinese short-drama apps have racked up over 1.21 billion downloads overseas, according to the figures cited. And the way that content gets made is shifting — locally produced originals, shot on location and tailored to local audiences, jumped from 27 percent in the first half of last year to 46 percent in the same period this year. In other words, straight translations are giving way to shows built specifically for overseas viewers.
Taken together, the picture is one of Chinese culture traveling through everyday entertainment — novels, games, short dramas — rather than big formal pushes. As the report puts it, the world is encountering China in a more everyday, concrete and softer way.
For Black Myth: Wukong, the 30 million milestone adds another chapter to an already remarkable run. The game is available on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
