Ever sworn a zone existed in World of Warcraft, only to find out it didn't? That's exactly the feeling Blizzard is chasing with WoW: Forever, the upcoming reimagining of classic Azeroth. And if they pull it off, you won't be able to tell what's old and what's new.
Announced at BlizzCon 2026, Forever adds four brand-new zones: the Riverglades, Mount Hjyal, Shen'dralas, and Zephras Isle. In an interview with GameSpot, senior art director Jeff Parrott and senior game designer Josh Greenfield explained how they're making these zones feel like they've always been part of the game. The team studied the original 2004 "vanilla" WoW extensively. "Riverglades is a great example," Parrott said. "It does feel extremely of that era." The goal? Zones that feel "familiar, but new."
Parrott described the feeling they're after: "It feels like going home. It feels like a place you've been before. Like, 'Did this exist?'" Greenfield added, "Yeah, the temporary Mandela Effect. It's like, 'I'm pretty sure this was there.' It's like, 'No, it wasn't.'" If players question whether a new zone was always there, Blizzard considers it a win.
But Forever isn't just about new zones. It's also giving old Azeroth a major visual overhaul. Dramatic lighting upgrades and new water tech make zones look better while keeping their original vibe. Duskwood is spookier than ever, and night elf zones feel even more magical with sunlight peeking through the forest canopy. The aim is to invoke your memory of original WoW, not necessarily how it actually looked.
"One of our core pillars is 'world as the main character,'" Greenfield said. "We introduce new rendering tech that allows us to better realize water, fog... Just make the world feel alive, more immersive." Parrott often says it's not about how WoW actually looked, but how you remember it. When you first see the pretty screenshots, you think, "That's cool." But once you're playing, you get that same immersion you felt when you first started. It feels like, "This is how I remember it," even if side-by-side it's not.
WoW: Forever's closed beta is currently live, with the full game launching November 4. It will include over 1,000 new quests and full controller support. While there are plenty of class changes, don't expect Shaman or Warlock tanks anytime soon.
So, are you ready to question your own memories of Azeroth? Will you be diving into the beta, or waiting for launch? Let us know in the comments!
