Ever wanted to experience large-scale tactical warfare on your console? Squad, the acclaimed PC shooter, is officially coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation players will get an early taste very soon.
Developer Offworld Industries has announced that a playable alpha for Squad will run on PS5 from October 16 to 25. That gives you a 10-day window to jump in and see what the fuss is about. If you're interested, you can sign up now. Xbox players, on the other hand, will have to wait for the full release—unless Offworld decides to offer another testing phase before launch.
The console version promises an optimized experience. Offworld is handpicking maps, adding "bespoke polish for flawless performance," and including optional crossplay with other consoles. There's also a new radial wheel for communication, letting you issue commands and pings quickly. And yes, the game's signature 50v50 matches will make the jump to consoles.
For those unfamiliar, Squad launched on PC in 2020 and has become one of the most beloved tactical shooters on Steam. It carved out a niche by blending the milsim depth of Arma with the faster-paced action of mainstream shooters like Call of Duty or Battlefield. Now, it's aiming to bring that unique mix to a whole new audience.
There's no release date yet for the full console version, but the alpha is a clear sign that things are moving forward. It'll be interesting to see if Squad can beat Wardogs to consoles. Bulkhead has already announced that Wardogs will hit consoles in 2028 and recently told IGN that it expects the game to also have a port on next-gen hardware when it becomes available. The studio also revealed that it has been building Wardogs with Xbox Series S in mind, ensuring optimization for both consoles and lower-end PCs.
So, will you be signing up for the PS5 alpha? Or are you holding out for the full launch on Xbox? Let us know in the comments!
