Netflix BioShock Movie: Director Says Script Is 'Pretty Close'

Ever wondered what's happening with that Netflix BioShock movie? You're not alone. Updates have been scarce, but director Francis Lawrence just gave fans a glimmer of hope. In a recent chat with GamesRadar+, he revealed that the script is nearly there.

"We're still working on a script and I think we're pretty close, and I'm feeling really good about it," Lawrence said. "Yeah, I would love to make it. I've been like dying to. I've been working at it. I've been trying." That's the kind of passion you want from a director, right?

The live-action BioShock movie was first announced by Netflix back in 2022, with Lawrence attached to direct. But Hollywood strikes and Lawrence's commitment to The Hunger Games franchise caused delays. In 2025, it was announced that the story was being reworked for a smaller budget. Producer Roy Lee described it as a "more personal point of view" project rather than a grander adaptation.

Lee also confirmed that the film will be based on the first game, but beyond that, details are being kept under wraps by Netflix and the game's producers, 2K and Take-Two Interactive. The original BioShock, released in 2007, is a first-person shooter set in the underwater city of Rapture. It follows Jack, who crash-lands in the Atlantic Ocean and discovers a hidden entrance to a dystopian society ravaged by a genetic material called ADAM, which grants superhuman abilities.

Meanwhile, Lawrence is busy with The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, which tells the story of Haymitch Abernathy's games. He called it a "return to form" for the franchise, with plenty of surprises. That movie hits theaters on November 20, 2026.

So, what does this mean for the BioShock movie? It's still in development, but with Lawrence's enthusiasm and a script that's "pretty close," things are looking up. Of course, there's no release date yet, and the smaller budget could mean a different feel from what fans might expect. But hey, at least it's not stuck in limbo.
