WoW: Forever Dev Bans Offensive Beta Names, Shows No Sympathy

Ever thought you could sneak a cheeky character name into a beta and get away with it? Think again. One of the developers behind the World of Warcraft: Forever beta has absolutely no sympathy for players who were kicked out for using offensive names.

During the beta, many players noticed that the usual strict name filter wasn't working properly. It turns out that was a mistake on Blizzard's part. Senior game producer Tom Ellis explained on X: "Our naming filter wasn’t ready to rock for dual names but we naively thought after twenty years folks knew what was and wasn’t OK and we’d be fine for a few weeks of beta till it came online."

But things were definitely not fine. From day one, Blizzard had to manually review every single name through their filter system and then double-check them. That's a lot of work, and it's all because some players decided to push the boundaries.

Eventually, a wave of bans went out alongside the beta's first major patch. The worst names got their access revoked, while the iffy ones were forced to change. Naturally, some of those players took to social media and Reddit to complain that they were wrongfully punished.

Ellis wasn't having any of it. He and a couple of colleagues spent an evening reading through every complaint on Reddit and Twitter. "So far every one of them who's posted their three cheeky or just inappropriate names has had a 4th character they have accidentally omitted," he said.

And just to drive the point home, Ellis added: "If you're genuinely confused, remember that it's our database, we can see every character you've created, not just the one you're playing. I read the list. No sympathy. Be a better human next time."

He also clarified that there's no new policy for WoW: Forever—anyone with names like that would have been banned in any version of WoW at any time in its history. So if you're thinking of trying something similar, don't bother. Blizzard is watching, and they have zero tolerance for that kind of behavior.
