Ever dreamed of rocking out as Eddie Riggs again? Well, that dream might cost a cool $100 million. Double Fine, the studio behind Psychonauts and Brutal Legend, is asking for exactly that to make Brutal Legend 2 a reality. But here's the twist: they're hoping a billionaire with deep pockets and a love for heavy metal will step up.
Right now, Double Fine is running a Kickstarter for their next big project, but it's not the sequel you might be hoping for. They're asking for a modest $400,000 to fund a smaller game, and they've already raised over $288,000 at the time of writing. But buried in the campaign is a single stretch goal: $100 million to finally continue the story of the metal-obsessed roadie, Eddie Riggs. That's roughly 20% of what Valve's Gabe Newell paid for his recent superyacht, if you need some perspective.
Before you start checking your couch cushions, let's be real: $100 million is a massive ask. Even the biggest Kickstarter success stories haven't come close. Shenmue 3 raised $6.3 million, Bloodstained pulled in $5.5 million, and Double Fine's own Broken Age secured $3.45 million. The only crowdfunded project to hit that scale is Star Citizen, which has raked in over $1 billion over 14 years—but it still doesn't have a full release date. So, the odds of Brutal Legend 2 happening through this route are slim to none, unless some eccentric billionaire decides to fund it for the glory of rock.
But why so expensive? Licensing music isn't cheap, especially when you're dealing with a game that's basically a love letter to classic rock and heavy metal. The original Brutal Legend featured a killer soundtrack with tracks from Ozzy Osbourne, Motörhead, and Judas Priest, among others. Securing those rights again would blow up the budget. And sadly, even if a sequel did get made, some legendary voices won't be returning. Ozzy Osbourne, Lemmy Kilmister, and Tim Curry have all passed away since the original game launched, which would make a sequel feel a little emptier.
Meanwhile, Double Fine is keeping busy. They're hosting Amnesia Fortnight, a two-week game jam where the team pitches and prototypes new ideas. This event has spawned hits like Costume Quest, Iron Brigade, and Stacking in the past. This year, they're prototyping a bunch of wild concepts, from Architactics to Zany titles like Lesbian Sled Death and Quokk 'n Roll. Backers will vote to decide which four get further development, and eventually, one will become their next full game. It's a fun way to keep the studio alive while they search for bigger funding.
After splitting from Microsoft, Double Fine went through a tough round of layoffs, cutting 23 people. Studio head Tim Schafer said it was necessary to ensure the studio's survival. So, this Kickstarter isn't just about making a game—it's about keeping the lights on.
So, will a billionaire step up and fund Brutal Legend 2? Probably not, but a gamer can dream. In the meantime, you can check out the Kickstarter and vote for your favorite prototype. Who knows, maybe one of these smaller games will become the next cult classic. What do you think—would you chip in for Brutal Legend 2 if you had the cash? Let us know in the comments!
