Bungie's Marathon Promises PvE and PvP That Actually Connect

Bungie says its new Marathon will link PvE and PvP, offer more ways to play, and add deeper player customization as it answers skeptical longtime fans.

Bungie's Marathon Promises PvE and PvP That Actually Connect

Remember when Bungie first pulled back the curtain on its new Marathon and longtime fans immediately started asking questions? An extraction shooter with no dedicated PvE modes? Where were the Pfhor? Where was the sarcastic AI? Why even use the Marathon name if it wasn't going to feel like the classics?

Well, Bungie has now responded to that chorus of skepticism with some fresh promises about where the game is headed. The studio says Marathon will feature interconnected PvE and PvP, more ways to play, and more player customization. That's a direct answer to the biggest complaints that had been building up before the game even launched.

For those who grew up on the original Marathon trilogy, the concerns were never just nitpicks. The name carries weight. It's tied to a specific vibe: a lonely space station, a snarky AI whispering in your ear, and a fight against an alien threat. So when the new Marathon showed up as an extraction shooter without dedicated PvE modes, plenty of old hands felt like the soul of the series was missing.

Now Bungie is signaling that PvE and PvP won't be siloed off from each other. Instead, the two will be interconnected, which suggests your actions in one space could ripple into the other. That's a meaningful shift for an extraction shooter, where the tension usually comes from mixing player-versus-environment danger with player-versus-player stakes. If Bungie can pull off that blend, it could give Marathon a identity that stands apart from the pack.

The promise of "more ways to play" is equally notable. It hints at flexibility, whether that means different modes, different approaches to a run, or simply more variety in how you spend your time in the game. And more player customization means you'll have a bigger say in how your character looks and maybe even how they play. For a game that's trying to win over a skeptical audience, giving players more control over their own experience is a smart move.

None of this erases the questions fans raised before launch. The Pfhor and the sarcastic AI are still part of the conversation, and Bungie hasn't said those classic elements are coming back. But these new promises do show the studio is listening, and that it's willing to evolve Marathon beyond the narrow extraction shooter mold that worried so many people.

So what do you think? Are interconnected PvE and PvP enough to win you over, or do you still need to see the Pfhor and that snarky AI before you're sold? Will you be picking this up?
