Remember the days of firing up a browser and diving into RuneScape? Well, the classic MMO is getting a major glow-up. Jagex has officially announced a brand-new entry in the series, codenamed "RS4," and it's being built in Unreal Engine.
The reveal came at RuneFest 2026, where attendees got a first look via an animated trailer. The short clip shows adventurers soaring on dragonback, floating sky islands, and a menacing three-headed dragon. Then the scene shifts to a town where a fresh adventurer arrives, ready to start their journey. It's a cinematic tease, but it sets the tone for something epic.
For those who missed the RuneScape wave, here's the quick history: Jagex launched the original game back in 2001. It was a medieval fantasy MMORPG that you could play right in your browser—no downloads, no fuss. That accessibility, combined with a massive sandbox world where you could chop trees, fish, or slay dragons as you pleased, made it a phenomenon. It even snagged a Guinness World Record for most users in an MMORPG. Over 20 years later, the franchise is still going strong with the main RuneScape, the beloved Old School RuneScape, and the survival spin-off Dragonwilds.
So what do we know about RS4? Right now, details are scarce. The game was only just announced, and there's an official website up, but no social media channels to follow yet. According to the site, we can expect more info starting next year—covering the world, gameplay, development team, and how and when you'll be able to play.
Jagex also teased an animated adaptation of the series, though specifics weren't shared. That's on top of the new game, so it's a busy time for the RuneScape universe.
For longtime fans, this is huge. RuneScape has always been about freedom and adventure, and moving to Unreal Engine could mean a visual and technical leap that brings the world to life like never before. Whether you're a veteran of Gielinor or a curious newcomer, RS4 is one to watch.
