Minecraft Hits 425 Million Sales, 300K New Players Daily

Ever wondered if Minecraft is still pulling in fresh faces after all these years? Turns out, it absolutely is.

During the Minecraft LIVE stream on September 27, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma dropped some serious numbers: Minecraft has now sold over 425 million copies worldwide. That's a jump of 75 million in roughly a year and a half, since the game crossed 350 million back in April 2025.

But here's the part that really stands out. Sharma says more than 300,000 people play Minecraft for the very first time every single day. "After 17+ years and 425M+ copies sold, I love seeing Minecraft continue to find new players and bring new adventures to long-time players," she shared.

For context, this game started public testing back in 2009 and launched its full version in 2011. Microsoft bought developer Mojang Studios in 2014 for $2.5 billion, and the sales records have kept tumbling since. The game hit 100 million copies in 2016, 176 million in 2019, 300 million in October 2023, and now 425 million. Only Tetris, across all its versions, has sold more.

One thing worth noting: since Minecraft is also available through Xbox Game Pass and PC Game Pass, those "first time playing" numbers aren't the same as copies purchased. Still, keeping that kind of pull after more than 15 years of operation is genuinely rare.

Mojang has also shaken up how it delivers content. Since 2024, the studio swapped its old once-a-year big update model for "Game Drops" - smaller updates rolled out multiple times a year, with the next drop's info revealed alongside each release. That keeps something new for players to look forward to all year round.

The September 27 Minecraft LIVE showcased the fourth Game Drop, set for winter 2026, which adds the Ice Cave biome and more. It also teased The Sift, a brand-new dimension arriving in 2027 - the first new dimension in over 14 years. Oh, and Minecraft is headed to Nintendo Switch 2 as well.
