Death Stranding Movie: Director Scouts Iceland for A24 Film

Ever wondered what the Death Stranding movie might actually look like? If the director's latest photos are anything to go by, it's going to feel a lot like the game.

Michael Sarnoski, the man directing the upcoming A24 adaptation, has revealed he's started location scouting for the film. On Instagram, Sarnoski posted a selfie from Iceland – and yes, he was wearing a Death Stranding t-shirt while standing in a rocky, rugged landscape that could've been pulled straight from the game. Another video shared on Twitter shows just how perfectly the location matches the harsh terrain and stunning vistas Sam Porter Bridges had to cross in both Death Stranding games.

Sarnoski's global travels suggest he may have wrapped up the script. Back in June, he told IGN, "I'm writing the script right now and hopefully almost done with that and really excited to dive into it." He also shared that they were working on revisions together, and that everyone seemed "super excited and happy with it." The director, known for Pig and A Quiet Place: Day One, added that Hideo Kojima has been "really generous in letting me play in his world but letting me tell a story with my own characters and my own sort of corner of this world, but keeping it honest to the game and doing something that fans will really like."

If you're a fan of the games, that last part should be reassuring. The Death Stranding movie was revealed during Kojima Productions' 10th Anniversary Stream, and it will focus on an original story set within the universe. The first two games centered on Sam Porter Bridges (Norman Reedus) as he tried to reconnect America after an apocalyptic event, and later traversed the plains of Australia on a group mission to open a new 'Plate Gate.'

So where does Kojima himself fit in? He's stated he won't be too involved in the creative process – and honestly, he's probably got his hands full. He currently has two games in development: O.D. and Physint. That leaves Sarnoski free to put his own stamp on the project, which sounds like exactly what's happening.

As for when you'll actually get to see the movie? No casting or release date has been announced yet. For now, we've got Iceland, a t-shirt, and a director who seems genuinely excited to bring this weird, wonderful world to the big screen.

What do you think – does Iceland look like the perfect stand-in for the world of Death Stranding? And who would you want to see cast in the film?
