Ever dropped six bucks on a game and felt like you robbed the developer? That's FlyKnight in a nutshell. This first-person RPG in the King's Field/Lunacid mold already punched way above its price tag, and now it's gotten a free 'Enhanced Edition' update that's absolutely beastmode.
The update comes from its solo dev and adds a ton of stuff: multiple difficulties (including a poison swamp exclusive to Hard mode, jokingly dubbed 'Miyazaki's Choice™'), item and enemy randomization with savable procedural generation seeds, four new weapon types, and unspecified additions to previous weapon categories. Plus, performance improvements that are 'especially noticeable on Steam Deck'—which is great, because that's where I most recommend playing. There are also graphics, UI, and balance tweaks, plus bugfixes.
If you haven't played FlyKnight yet, it looks like Old School Runescape and feels like it could have asked for twice the money. It's still only $6 upfront—or $4 right now, thanks to a sale running through September 30. That's basically the price of a pretty good cup of coffee, or a slightly worse one on sale.
What sets FlyKnight apart from other indie King's Field-likes is its combat. It uses a unique locational limb damage system, letting you target weak spots or weapon-holding appendages. It's slow-paced but high-skill, like a classic survival horror game—think less dodging and i-frames, more controlling distance, taking advantage of stagger opportunities, and perfect blocking. And yes, it's a game about anthropomorphic bugs, so severed limbs are kind of a thing.
I loved the seven hours I spent with it on Steam Deck last year and always meant to revisit. Now I have the perfect excuse. If you're into RPGs that respect your time and your wallet, FlyKnight is an easy recommendation. Will you be picking it up?
