Did you ever dream of returning to the swamp with Shrek, Fiona, and Donkey in glorious 4K? Well, that dream might be coming true. A remaster of 2004's Shrek 2: The Game has leaked thanks to an Xbox.com listing that was seemingly published a bit too early. The page has since been taken down, but not before eagle-eyed fans spotted all the juicy details.
According to the listing, this remaster will feature better textures, an enhanced UI, and 4K resolution. That means you can relive the ogre-sized adventure with visuals that look way better than your old PS2 copy. And yes, the beloved co-op is back: you can play solo or team up with up to three friends, either locally or online. Playable characters include Shrek, Fiona, and Donkey, among others.
But that's not all. The remaster also adds a new Photo Mode and Cheat Mode, so you can snap pics of your favorite ogre and maybe unlock some fun extras. The original game was published by Activision, but this time Aspyr Media is handling the release. If that name rings a bell, it's because Aspyr was also behind the recent The Lord of the Rings re-releases.
Unfortunately, the Xbox page didn't list a release date or price. The game is expected to come to PlayStation as well, and a Switch version wouldn't be a surprise either. One fan even joked that Aspyr should release it on November 19 to go head-to-head with GTA 6 in a heavyweight battle for the ages. Now that would be a showdown.
This leak might not be the only sign of Shrek's return. The official Shrek account posted a compilation of Shrek video game footage with the caption, "Only real gamers played Shrek," and many think it's connected to the remaster. The compilation includes the OG Shrek 2 game, along with others like Shrek Smash N' Crash Racing and Shrek Super Party.
It's already been a big year for Shrek in gaming. The big green guy recently joined Ubisoft's fighting game Brawlhalla and FIFA Heroes. Plus, the original Shrek movie returned to theaters earlier this year to celebrate the franchise's 25th anniversary. And the long-awaited Shrek 5 is set for release in Summer 2027. The Shrek movie franchise is a juggernaut, with its four main installments collectively grossing $3 billion, not even counting the Puss in Boots spin-offs.
Beyond movies, there's a Donkey movie planned for 2028, with Eddie Murphy returning to voice Donkey. There are also Shrek-themed attractions at Universal Studios theme parks, including a new kids-themed resort in Texas, and countless memes that have kept Shrek popular for 25 years.
