Ever tried replaying Metro 2033 on your shiny new console or PC? It's a bit of a rough ride these days, right? Well, good news: 4A Games is giving the first two Metro games some serious next-gen love.
With Metro 2039 set to launch on February 4, 2027, the developer is preparing fans by updating Metro 2033 and Metro Last Light for modern hardware. The updates drop on PC October 22 and on consoles October 29. Full patch notes are promised before release, but we already know some key details.
On PS5 and Xbox Series X, both games will run at either native 4K at 60 fps or upscaled 4K at 120 fps. PS5 Pro players get PSSR support, while Xbox consoles use traditional temporal upscaling. Over on PC, the games finally get DLSS support, plus some unnamed quality-of-life improvements.
These updates should fix long-standing bugs and stability issues. Metro 2033 originally launched in 2010, and Last Light followed in 2013. They were tech showcases back then, but they haven't aged gracefully—especially on modern PCs, where tweaking is often required just to get them running smoothly.
Don't expect ray tracing or other crazy visual upgrades. 4A Games isn't adding anything that will melt your GPU, so these should be much easier to run at high settings than they were at launch. That's a relief for anyone who remembers the torture these games put their graphics cards through.
If you're hyped for Metro 2039, these updates are a perfect excuse to revisit the classics. We've already gone hands-on with 2039, and it looks like an incredible, brutal post-apocalyptic shooter that stays true to the series' roots of pushing PC hardware to its limits. Though with the ongoing RAM crisis, its niche appeal might be limited when benchmarks roll out.
Still, here's hoping 4A Games finds a way to make a Metro game scalable at launch for once. Will you be jumping back into Metro 2033 and Last Light with these upgrades? Let us know in the comments!
