Edgerunners Creator Ignored David Return DMs for Season 2

Ever begged a showrunner to bring back your favorite character? Cyberpunk: Edgerunners creator Bartosz Sztybor knows that feeling all too well – except he's on the receiving end.

Sztybor told GamesRadar+ that he gets "dozens" of DMs every day asking him to bring David back for season 2. But despite the pressure, he's sticking to his guns. "From the very start, I knew that – no – [season two] needs to be something different to stay true to the IP," he said. "Even if the whole audience wants David back, I had a thought that they don't really want that. If they got that, they would probably be disappointed."

So instead of resurrecting David – who was crushingly killed off in season 1 along with most of his crew – season 2 introduces a brand new squad: fading edgerunner Weak Kingsley, camera-obsessed Roman, nomad D., and chrome-infused Talia. That's a bold move, and Sztybor admits it's causing him "nightmares." "Even now, I have nightmares," he said. "Season 2 is different. It's so different that people who fell in love with Edgerunners will be surprised. So I felt pressure. I still have nightmares, but I'm super proud [of] the decision to make something completely different. I stayed strong with that decision."

He credits animation studio Studio Trigger for helping him stick to his vision. "[Animation studio] Studio Trigger helped with that… our rebel approach, Studio Trigger's rebel approach was very, very helpful here."

And it looks like that rebel approach is paying off. Early reactions to Cyberpunk: Edgerunners season 2 have been overwhelmingly positive, suggesting the follow-up can be just as preem as the 2022 modern classic.
