Ever been hyped for a game, only to see it pushed back not once but twice? That's the rollercoaster 007 First Light fans on Switch 2 are riding right now. IO Interactive has delayed the Switch 2 edition yet again, and the studio's technical producer, Cristina Vega, is shedding light on why they felt they had "no choice."
Speaking to Inven Global, Vega called the delay "disappointing news for fans," but stressed it was a decision "also made for their benefit." Originally, First Light was supposed to launch alongside other versions in May 2026. Then IO pushed it to Summer 2026, and now it's been bumped all the way to March 2027. That's a hefty wait for Nintendo fans eager to step into Bond's shoes.
So what's the holdup? Vega explained that the team had been grinding hard for a while and "needed a brief breather." On top of that, there were "requests from marketing and various other factors" that left IO with "no choice" but to delay the Switch 2 edition to 2027. "Ultimately, we decided on another delay because we want fans to experience the game in its most polished form on Switch 2, so we ask for your understanding," she said.
If you were hoping for some fancy mouse controls on Switch 2, don't hold your breath. Vega confirmed that First Light won't utilize the console's mouse functionality. The team didn't find a way to make it work, and she doesn't think it "makes particular sense from a gameplay perspective" anyway. Fair enough.
Technically speaking, the Switch 2 is less powerful than the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, so Vega acknowledged that "some compromises are inevitable." One example: object detail won't be as impressive. "We might slightly lower the detail on trees, but core elements the player looks at, and the central aspects of gameplay, must remain identical," she said. You'll also see fewer NPCs in the Switch 2 version, but don't worry—there won't be fewer enemies to fight. "We haven't changed the gameplay itself, so players don't need to worry about the game feeling empty due to reduced NPCs," Vega explained.
Beyond First Light, IO Interactive is also working on a new fantasy game, though after Xbox pulled funding, the studio had to lay off staff. Many fans are clamoring for a sequel to First Light, but no official announcements have been made yet. For now, Switch 2 owners will have to wait until March 2027 to get their hands on the game.
