Ever worried that Fable might lose its signature charm? You're not alone. With all the big games flooding the market, it's easy to forget that Playground Games is working on a new Fable. But after the fall rush, it's one of the biggest releases to kick off 2027, both in scale and hype. Yet, the last few gameplay demos left players mixed, especially about the combat. So, what's the team saying now?

In an interview with EDGE magazine (transcription via GamesRadar), associate director Will Kennedy reaffirmed an important factor: approachability. Why? Because there's a "legacy" among the original titles for being "quite approachable, so that's something we kept in mind while developing our combat system." So if you loved the accessible feel of the old Fables, you'll be happy to hear that's still a priority.

But don't think that means the combat lacks depth. Associate director Craig Littler brought up examples of what the team is aiming for. Decapitating Hollow Folk, for instance, makes it so that "they don't know where to go [...] When you do that to a ranged enemy [...] they're just firing off in every direction." That's a pretty wild visual, right? It shows that there's more under the hood than just button mashing.

And if you're someone who likes the combat but wants more variety, especially since the older games leaned into role-playing, not every quest follows the same formula. "There are quests that are much broader. More exploration, even a puzzle or two along the way. One of the things we're really proud about is the variety of activities and how they all harmonize to tell a story that you feel really involved in," says Kennedy.

Combine that with life sim activities and building a complex reputation, and Fable should offer plenty to do beyond the 15 to 20 hours required to finish its story (not including the equivalent hours for exploration and side content). That means you can easily sink dozens of hours into this world.

Of course, with its launch set for February 23rd, 2027, on Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC, Playground still has time to polish some of the more mundane aspects. And who knows? The combat could very well shine by then. Stay tuned for updates in the meantime.

What do you think about Fable's approach to combat and activities? Will you be picking it up when it launches? Let us know in the comments!
