Peter Molyneux: Black & White 3 Is 'Difficult' But Teases Remaster

Ever wondered why we've never gotten a Black & White 3? You're not alone. In a recent interview with Peter Molyneux, the legendary designer opened up about the long-awaited sequel and why it's been stuck in limbo for two decades.

Molyneux didn't mince words: "It's such a difficult, difficult, challenging title to develop." But the bigger hurdle? Publishers just aren't interested in god games anymore. "God games are seen as a small piece of pie by publishers," he explained. And honestly, that tracks. Over the last 10-20 years, major publishers have gone all-in on a few genres and business models—especially live-service. And we all know how that's gone (looking at you, Concord, Anthem, and Redfall). Why fund a complex god game when you can chase the Fortnite golden goose? Even if it means massive losses.

Given that landscape, getting any god game greenlit—even a sequel to one of the most beloved series ever—was next to impossible. So it's kind of a miracle that Molyneux's new game, Masters of Albion, is actually happening, even in Early Access. Credit his pedigree as the father of the genre.

But just when the interview seemed to be winding down with disappointment, Molyneux dropped a tantalizing teaser: he thinks a Black & White remaster might be in the works. Now, before you get too excited, take it with a pinch of salt. Molyneux doesn't own Black & White anymore and isn't connected to EA or Microsoft, so he's not involved. He's only speculating, not confirming. Still, if true, it would be huge—Black & White is currently the number one most-wanted game on GOG's wishlist, and a well-done remaster could be amazing.

More importantly, a successful remaster could potentially open the door for a new game. That might feel far-fetched right now, but it's a step in the right direction. And hey, with today's AI technology, imagine what Black & White's famous creatures could do! I'll keep my fingers crossed.

In the meantime, Molyneux is busy with Masters of Albion's New Beginnings update, which has taken his latest god game to a whole new level. It's even teased its own possible titans, so there's plenty to dive into while we wait for more Black & White news.

What do you think? Would you play a Black & White remaster or a third game? Let us know in the comments!
