LOTRO Dev: Why MMOs Feel Way Easier Today

A Lord of the Rings Online designer explains why modern MMOs are easier than the classics — and it all comes down to a changing market.

LOTRO Dev: Why MMOs Feel Way Easier Today

Ever fire up an old-school MMO and wonder how you ever survived it? You're not imagining things. According to one Lord of the Rings Online developer, modern MMOs really are a whole lot easier than they used to be — and there's a very specific reason why.

Matt Elliott, Senior World Designer on LOTRO, tackled the topic head-on while answering a question about how the game handles default difficulty. His verdict? The market changed.

If you were around for the MMORPG boom at the turn of the century, you remember the grind. Brutal death penalties, long travel times, and group content that basically demanded you bring friends or log off. Those days shaped a generation of players — but they also shaped a generation of expectations that no longer line up with how the genre sells today.

Elliott's point is simple: MMOs didn't get easier by accident. They got easier because the audience and the market around them shifted. What was once a niche hobby for the hardest of the hardcore gradually opened up to a much wider crowd, and design priorities followed the money and the players.

That's not necessarily a bad thing, either. A friendlier difficulty curve means more people can actually see the content, stick around past the first few hours, and maybe bring a friend along. Accessibility keeps MMOs alive — and for a game like LOTRO, which has been running for well over a decade, keeping new players flowing in matters more than ever.

Still, for veterans who cut their teeth on punishing mechanics, there's a real sense of something lost. The shared struggle, the satisfaction of finally downing a boss after weeks of wipes — that flavor of MMO is harder to find in today's landscape. Elliott's comments acknowledge that tension rather than dismissing it.

So the next time you breeze through a quest that would've wrecked you in 2004, don't feel bad. The genre grew up, the market moved on, and the games followed. Whether that's progress or a compromise depends entirely on which era you call home.

What do you think — are modern MMOs too soft, or finally welcoming? Will you be jumping back into LOTRO to see for yourself?
