Warhorse Says Be Patient for New LOTR RPG—Here's What We Know

Are you a Lord of the Rings fan eagerly awaiting the next big Middle-earth game? If so, you might need to channel your inner Ent and practice some patience. Warhorse Studios, the team behind Kingdom Come: Deliverance, has a new LOTR RPG in the works, but they're not ready to spill the beans just yet.

In a recent social media post, the studio said, "We're excited to tell you guys more, you've just gotta be patient for now." That's right—no new details, no gameplay, no release date. Just a gentle reminder that good things come to those who wait.

So, what do we actually know about this mysterious project? Warhorse announced it earlier this year, describing it as a "deeply immersive" open-world RPG set in Middle-earth. They promise a "living world" filled with "interesting characters, memorable places, and, of course, a strong narrative focus." Sounds promising, right? But beyond that, it's all a bit vague.

One key piece of info: Viktor Bocan, the design director on Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, is leading the development of this untitled LOTR game. That's a solid pedigree, given the acclaim for Warhorse's previous work.

And Warhorse isn't just stopping at Middle-earth. They've got multiple irons in the fire, including a new Kingdom Come game and even a movie adaptation. So they're busy, but clearly passionate about expanding their universe.

Interestingly, Warhorse isn't the only studio diving into LOTR. Crystal Dynamics, known for Tomb Raider, is reportedly working on their own Lord of the Rings game as well. Both studios are under the Embracer Group umbrella, which holds the rights to Tolkien's works. Plus, Aspyr Media has teased more classic LOTR game re-releases after shadow-dropping War in the North.

Beyond gaming, the franchise is thriving. Prime Video's The Rings of Power returns for a third season this November, and Andy Serkis is set to direct The Hunt for Gollum, hitting theaters in 2027. So there's plenty to keep fans occupied while we wait for Warhorse's take on Middle-earth.
