Uncharted 5 Reportedly in the Works with Nathan Drake

Ever wondered if we'd see Nathan Drake again? Well, grab your grappling hook because a new report says Uncharted 5 is in development at Naughty Dog.

According to MP1st, and backed up by VGC, the studio is working on a new entry in the Uncharted series. This would be the first since 2017's Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. The report claims that Shaun Escayg, who directed The Lost Legacy, is leading the project. Escayg briefly left Naughty Dog to work on Crystal Dynamics' Avengers game before returning.

So where does this fit in Naughty Dog's busy schedule? The report suggests Uncharted 5 will be the studio's next release after Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, with The Last of Us 3 coming afterwards. That lines up with Naughty Dog's recent statement that it's working on multiple new Last of Us projects. Intergalactic, the studio's first new IP since 2013's The Last of Us, will be fully revealed in 2027, though its release window is still unknown.

As for the game itself, details are scarce. But the report mentions that series protagonist Nathan Drake will be present in some capacity. That could mean Nathan's daughter, Cassie Drake, who appeared at the end of Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, might take over as the lead. Also, this new entry is apparently not a remake of any sort, as Naughty Dog reportedly shelved those plans long ago.

Uncharted 4 was positioned as the definitive end for Nathan Drake's story when it launched in 2016, but Naughty Dog has repeatedly hinted that the franchise isn't done. Escayg himself said in 2022, "I think we can say for certain that we can never say never." And in February of this year, he posted a vague Instagram photo of a cannon in a tropical environment captioned "research," sparking speculation that he might be working on something Uncharted-related.

When could Uncharted 5 release? That's anyone's guess, but it's more likely to arrive on the PlayStation 6, given that Sony is expected to launch its next-generation console sometime in 2028. For now, we'll have to wait and see what Naughty Dog has up its sleeve.
