Japan's PC Gaming Market Doubles in 4 Years

Did you know that PC gaming in Japan has more than doubled in size over the last four years? That's right – according to a new report from the Computer Entertainment Supplier's Association, the Land of the Rising Sun is experiencing a major PC gaming boom.

The data, shared during Tokyo Game Show and reported by Kotaku, shows that PC revenue in Japan jumped from around 132.1 billion yen in 2021 to 300 billion yen in 2025. That's a massive 134% increase. For a country where consoles from Sony and Nintendo have long dominated, this shift is pretty huge.

So what's driving this growth? It turns out Japanese players are flocking to global free-to-play titles. The three biggest sellers on Steam in Japan are Counter-Strike 2, Apex Legends, and PUBG: Battlegrounds. These games offer well-made experiences with no upfront cost, and they have massive global communities – it's easy to see why they're so popular.

But when it comes to hours spent playing, Japan's tastes lean toward different titles. Left 4 Dead and Terraria take the top two spots, with Stardew Valley also making the list. Whether you're into killing zombies or building a cozy homestead, there's something for everyone.

Interestingly, Monster Hunter Wilds is the only Japan-made game to rank prominently on PC in terms of revenue. That's a notable exception in a market dominated by international hits.

While PC gaming is on the rise, other sectors are more mixed. Consoles outside the Switch 2 have been up and down, and mobile has only grown by around 4.5%. It seems the PC platform is the one to watch in Japan right now.
