Imagine crunching for months to get a game finished, watching it go gold, and then getting laid off days later. That's exactly what happened to Juan Vaca, story director on Gears of War: E-Day.
Vaca announced on LinkedIn that he's part of Microsoft's latest round of layoffs, which hit as part of the Xbox "reset." He wrote: "I am part of this round of Microsoft layoffs and am open to new opportunities in games/film/tv. If your team needs a director/storyteller please reach out." The Coalition, the studio behind Gears, wasn't named in Matt Booty's blog post about the reset, but Vaca's post made it clear the cuts reached the team.
What makes this sting even more is the timing. Gears of War: E-Day went gold just days before the layoffs were announced, with a full release planned for Oct. 6. Going gold means the game is finished and ready for manufacturing—a moment developers usually celebrate. Instead, Vaca found himself job hunting.
It's a familiar story in the games industry. Last year, a writer on Apex Legends was laid off just one day after a character she spent a year writing was unveiled. And it's not just Microsoft: Bit Reactor, the studio behind Star Wars Zero Company, furloughed most of its staff despite glowing reviews and over a million copies sold. It feels like no amount of success, sales, or hard work can protect you from the layoff scythe.
For fans, this is a sobering reminder that the games we love are made by people who often get kicked to the curb right when their work is about to shine. Vaca's situation is especially galling because E-Day is a major release for Xbox, and he helped shape its story. Now he's looking for his next opportunity.
If you're a developer, this might make you think twice about job security. If you're a player, it's a reminder to appreciate the humans behind the games. Either way, it's a tough time to cheer for the industry when the reward for finishing a project can be a pink slip.
