Have you ever wondered if the new Street Fighter movie could possibly be worse than the 1994 disaster? Well, the first reviews are in, and it's not looking great—but it's still an improvement! The 2026 live-action Street Fighter, directed by Kitato Sakurai, currently sits at a 41% score on Rotten Tomatoes. That's far from fresh, but it's a big step up from the 1994 version's 20%.
The plot follows Ryu (Andrew Koji) and Ken (Noah Centineo) as they enter the World Warrior Tournament, persuaded by Chun-Li (Callina Liang). Her mission? Take down the hilariously evil M. Bison (David Dastmalchian), who rocks a silly hat. Critics are divided: The Guardian called it "satisfied punching down on itself" and stuck in the '90s, while our own review gave it 2.5/5 stars, describing it as "an overstuffed miss" that leaves you with a headache. Ouch.
But not everyone hated it. The New York Times praised it as "the natural zenith of an arcade player's imagination," saying it captures the wild "and then, and then" fantasies of a '90s kid smashing at the air. So, it might be a nostalgic trip for some, and a cringe fest for others.
One thing's for sure: the cast is stacked. Alongside Koji, Centineo, Liang, and Dastmalchian, you've got Cody Rhodes as Guile, Roman Reigns as Akuma, Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson as Balrog, Jason Momoa as Blanka, Orville Peck as Vega, Andrew Schulz as Dan, and Mel Jarnson as Cammy. That's a lot of star power for a movie that might be a mess.
So, will you be checking it out when it hits theaters on October 16? Maybe you'll want to do a double feature with the 1994 version—could be fun, or incredibly mid. Either way, it's a fascinating look at how video game movies have (or haven't) evolved.
