Were you getting your hopes up for a brand-new Xbox game announcement at Gamescom this year? Well, you might want to tap the brakes just a bit. If you have been keeping a close eye on the pre-show rumor mill, it looks like expectations need a quick reality check.
Industry insider NateTheHate2 has recently amended his earlier comments regarding a potential Xbox game reveal at the upcoming event. While gamers were initially bracing for a fun surprise, the insider now says that a brand-new announcement may not happen after all.
If you missed the initial buzz, NateTheHate2 previously claimed that he had heard of a "neat Xbox announcement that should be at Gamescom." He noted at the time that the project would be a "new game in a series" rather than a totally fresh IP. To get ahead of the inevitable speculation, he explicitly clarified that it was not a new Banjo-Kazooie game. Interestingly, he described the project as a franchise owned by Microsoft, but developed by a studio Microsoft does not own, leaving fans to guess which external team might be handling the property.
However, things seem to have changed behind the scenes. In an updated statement, NateTheHate2 walked back the excitement, writing: "Based on recent conversations, it does not seem likely that we'll get any new Xbox game announcements at Gamescom." While nothing is ever set in stone until the stage lights turn on, it definitely looks like we should lower our expectations for fresh world premieres.
That said, Xbox fans still have plenty to look forward to during the event. While Xbox is not hosting its own dedicated showcase at Gamescom, the door remains open for updates during Geoff Keighley's Opening Night Live on August 25.
On the show floor itself, the Xbox booth will feature a stacked lineup of 25 upcoming games. Attendees will get a look at major titles including Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, Fable, Minecraft Dungeons II, Gears of War: E-Day, Metro 2039, Stranger Than Heaven, and Alien: Isolation 2.
If you are following the action from home, you will not be left out either. Microsoft is running live broadcasts directly from the Xbox booth on August 26 and August 27, promising a mix of interviews, guest appearances, gameplay reveals, trailers, and more. With 2026 marking the big 25th anniversary of Xbox, Microsoft has a lot planned for the road ahead.
