Cyberpunk 2077 Movie: Not a Game Adaptation, Says CD Projekt

Ever wondered what a Cyberpunk 2077 movie would look like? Well, it turns out it won't be a straight retelling of V's story. CD Projekt co-CEO Michał Nowakowski recently told Polish outlet PAP Biznes that the upcoming live-action project with Paramount Pictures will tell a new story in the Cyberpunk universe, not a one-to-one translation of the game.

"Our contract with Anonymous Content expired, and in the meantime, an opportunity arose to establish cooperation with Paramount Pictures," Nowakowski said. "We decided that we would conduct a live-action Cyberpunk project in a new formula." He added: "We definitely don't want to make a film adaptation of the game. We want to tell a story in the world of Cyberpunk, but it won't be a one-to-one translation of the game's story."

That's probably a smart move. V's story has already been told, and trying to replicate it on film would only invite unflattering comparisons. Night City is packed with other tales to tell, and it's easy to tie things back to the game with references or cameos if needed. Just look at Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and Resident Evil—two of the most successful game-to-screen adaptations—which took their settings and made them their own.

As for when we'll see this movie, it's way too early to say. But if you're hungry for more Cyberpunk, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is set to debut on Netflix on October 20. In the meantime, there are plenty of games to look forward to.

What do you think about a Cyberpunk movie that's not a direct adaptation? Will you be picking this up when it eventually hits theaters?
