Blizzard Explains Why StarCraft Shooter Was Announced for 2030

Blizzard GM Dan Hay reveals why the new StarCraft open-world shooter was announced so early, despite its 2030 release date, and shares details on the game's third-person, single-player focus.

Blizzard Explains Why StarCraft Shooter Was Announced for 2030

Did you catch the StarCraft shooter reveal at BlizzCon? If you did, you're probably still processing that 2030 release date. That's right, we're getting a new StarCraft game, but it's an open-world shooter, and it's not coming for another six years. So why would Blizzard announce it now? We got the scoop straight from Blizzard GM Dan Hay at BlizzCon.

"We totally get the question. You walk that kind of knife's edge of how much do we want to show, when do we want to show," Hay told GameSpot. "We've been working on it for a little bit now, and we feel like we've got something that we wanted to show. We felt like this was the right moment." According to Hay, the team has been building out the story, characters, and the feeling of the worlds, and they finally reached a point where they felt they had enough to share. "About a year ago, we started to feel like we were there, so we were like, 'Okay, it's time to show it. It's time to get feedback.'"

That feedback is crucial, even if it's just surface-level for now. The reveal was an extended cinematic that set the vibe but didn't show any gameplay. We know it's an open-world shooter, and Blizzard confirmed it's a third-person, single-player game. But beyond that, details are scarce. Still, Hay sees value in attaching a date to the project. "I like a date," he said. "I like the idea that there's something out there for us to go after. It helps us sometimes when you get into a meeting and you're thinking about the creative... The answer is, 'Can we get all this done by that date?' If the answer is no: Let's rethink, let's refocus."

A new StarCraft game that feels out of reach isn't new; StarCraft: Ghost was in development for ages but never came out. Hay wasn't at Blizzard during that era, but he shared Blizzard's vision for the new StarCraft. "We're building a new team. We've got a whole bunch of energy... this really comes from what we call a creative ache," he said. "In previous versions of StarCraft, you were up above, looking down at the battlefield... This time, we were like, 'What if it was just one? What if you only got one suit? What if you had to take care of it?'"

Hay used the analogy of your first car: it probably wasn't great, but it was amazing because it was yours. "What happens when you get this thing and you have to take care of it? What happens when you start to see a world that has opportunity and discovery, but things that you can also pick up and maybe make your armor better?" He also described the teaser, where the character gets the armor and feels powerful, but then faces the Zerg. "You watch his face--and we spent a ton of time just on the facial expression--of just loss... 'I might be in trouble here.' But he put up a valiant effort."

That moment sets the tone: "Our story is darker. It's grittier. It's a little bit meaner; it has more stakes and more bite to it." Hay also revealed that you'll fight the Protoss, too. So, what do you think? Are you excited for a darker, single-player StarCraft shooter, even if it's years away? Let us know in the comments!
