Hideo Kojima Turns 63, Reflects on Time and Future Games

Have you ever stopped to think about just how many legendary games one creator can give us in a lifetime? Iconic game designer Hideo Kojima officially celebrated his 63rd birthday on August 24, and the big milestone has him feeling pretty reflective about life, time, and his future in the industry. But if you were worried he might be packing it up and retiring anytime soon, don't worry—he is not going anywhere.

Opening up on social media to mark his birthday, Kojima explained that he is well aware he will not live forever, even mentioning that he already knows how he wants to die. Because of this, he is being especially mindful about how he chooses to spend his remaining time. He pointed out that as he gets older, the things he "has to do" and "wants to do" only continue to pile up, while the actual time available to do them keeps shrinking. As he shared, once you take a project on, you cannot simply drop it and walk away, which means he constantly needs to reassess his life and how his time is spent.

Kojima also looked ahead to the near future, noting that 2026 is set to be a massive year for his career. That year will mark his 40th anniversary of developing games, having started his professional path all the way back in 1986. On top of that, 2026 will celebrate the 10th anniversary of Kojima Productions as an independent studio, which he founded after departing Konami (where he originally led an internal unit by the exact same name).

Even with plenty of new ventures knocking on his door, Kojima made it clear that he wants to stay laser-focused on game creation. While he didn't specify every single offer coming his way, it was previously reported that he was asked if he wanted to direct the upcoming Death Stranding movie adaptation before he decided to sit out and hand directing duties over to Michael Sarnoski.

That commitment to games is great news for all of us, because his current plate is looking packed. Kojima is actively working on several major titles, including the espionage action game Physint and the horror project OD. His team even appeared to update a night sky scene in Death Stranding 2 specifically to honor his birthday.

To cap off the festivities, the Kojima Productions crew treated the visionary director to an awesome birthday cake, and he also shared a snapshot alongside his good friend Geoff Keighley.
