Sony confirms the Xperia 10 VI won't get Android 17 despite a promised three OS upgrades, citing storage limitations. The company apologizes but users are left confused.

Sony Breaks Android 17 Promise for Xperia 10 VI, Issues Apology

Well, this is awkward. Sony just dropped its Android 17 update list, and guess who's missing? The Xperia 10 VI. That's right, the phone Sony promised would get three major Android updates is now getting left behind on its supposed final upgrade. Cue the disappointed sighs from owners.

In a notice on its website, Sony confirmed that the Xperia 10 VI, launched in 2024, won't be seeing Android 17. The reason? After a "detailed technical evaluation," Sony says the phone's storage configuration can't deliver a "satisfactory Android 17 experience." Translation: they think the hardware just can't handle the new software smoothly.

Let's recap what's inside the Xperia 10 VI. It packs 128GB of storage, a 6.1-inch 21:9 OLED display with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus, IP68 water resistance, and weighs 164 grams. Under the hood, it's got a Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 chip, 8GB of RAM, and a 60Hz refresh rate. Solid mid-range specs, but apparently not enough for Android 17.

Here's the kicker: when Sony launched the phone, it promised three major Android updates. Android 17 was supposed to be the last one. Now, that promise is broken, and it's raising eyebrows about Sony's update strategy. If a phone can't handle the final update it was promised, what does that say about the company's commitment?

Adding to the confusion, the Xperia 10 VII also has 128GB of storage, yet it's on the Android 17 list. So why does the 10 VI get the short end of the stick? Sony's vague mention of "technical limitations" hints that the 10 VI might use slower flash storage, but they won't say whether it's UFS 2.2 or UFS 3.1. That lack of clarity only leaves more questions.

On the bright side, Sony says security updates for the Xperia 10 VI will continue as promised: four years from launch. They also issued an apology: "We deeply apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your understanding." Still, an apology doesn't soften the blow for users who bought the phone expecting that final OS upgrade.

So, Xperia 10 VI owners, how are you feeling about this? Are you satisfied with security updates, or does the broken promise leave a bad taste? Let us know in the comments.
