Ever wondered what Zach Cregger's Resident Evil movie would look like as a classic PS1 game? One fan is answering that question right now. Developer Julian Zamora (chicanogoth on Instagram) is working on Resident Evil: The Movie The Game, a fan-made adaptation of the film that itself adapts the iconic game series. Yes, it's an adaptation of an adaptation, and it looks delightfully retro.
Zamora recently shared a gameplay clip showing a recognizable scene from the movie, recreated in video game form. In the film, an early scene sees Bryan (played by Austin Abrams) seeking refuge in a middle-of-nowhere barn while battling a snowstorm and an infected killer dog. The clip captures that moment: a barn in the background, a dog chasing the player character, and that unmistakable low-poly PS1 vibe. It's clearly early days, but the potential is already shining through.
Like the classic PS1 Resident Evil games, Zamora's project uses fixed camera angles that carefully control what's in and out of view. That design choice alone should trigger some survival horror nostalgia. The game is currently being built on Godot, and Zamora says they're excited to share more progress very soon. "I'm still not sure how to do those pre-rendered flat environments from the PS1 days sadly, so yeah, it's giving more Resident Evil Code Veronica and I like it," they explained.
Cregger's latest reboot of the Resident Evil film franchise has been a massive box office draw, outgrossing his big horror hit from last year, Weapons. GamesRadar's review called it the "best video game movie full stop" and "a horror-comedy to match the best the genre has to offer." Even Hideo Kojima weighed in, saying it "reminded me how I felt when I played the first game." With that kind of reception, it's no wonder fans are inspired to create their own remakes.
This fan project is a love letter to both the movie and the classic survival horror era. The fixed camera angles, the Godot engine, the early build footage—it all points to a passion project worth keeping an eye on. Zamora's openness about the challenges (like those pre-rendered backgrounds) makes the journey even more relatable.
So, what do you think? Are you excited to see a PS1-style take on the Resident Evil movie? Will you be keeping tabs on this fan project as it develops? Let us know in the comments!
