Did you think you were done with Zero Parades? Think again. ZA/UM Studio has just announced a Director's Cut for its May-released RPG, and it's coming as a free update for everyone on October 1. That's right—if you already own the game on PC, you're getting a hefty chunk of new stuff at no extra cost. And for console players, the wait is almost over: the PS5 version launches on November 3. Sorry, Xbox and Switch fans—no word on those platforms yet.
So what exactly is in this Director's Cut? For starters, it adds about 40,000 words of new material, which ZA/UM says makes the game feel "tangibly different" from the original release. The centerpiece is a brand-new Dramatic Encounter called the Quisach Roundabout. Here's the setup: Hershel Wilk and her old friend Ramses are stoned out of their minds, behind the wheel of a hijacked tuk-tuk, and seemingly unable to escape the Quisach Roundabout late at night. The objective seems simple enough—take the right exit and head home. But fail to do so, and well… things might get existential. And possibly fatal.
That's not all. The Director's Cut also introduces the "Backstage," which lets you experience earlier versions of select levels from Zero Parades. You can explore these locations and see how they changed for the finished game. The Backstage will also highlight examples of the technical steps and creative processes behind the changes the studio made during development. You'll be able to interact with in-game orbs that feature audio stories and commentary from the developers, narrated by art director Kaspar Tamsalu, who explains how Zero Parades was made. These orbs will also provide insights into what ZA/UM cut from the game.
Beyond the new content, the Director's Cut makes changes to how Zero Parades sounds and plays. There are re-recorded English voiceovers, new outfits and clothing, new death screens, and more visual and atmospheric features. The update also introduces ultrawide support for 2:19 and 32:9 displays, along with controller remapping, inventory sorting, and a new Photosensitivity Mode. Plus, if you want more spy features, you can now obscure parts of previous conversations with redaction bars—because even your own history should feel classified, according to ZA/UM.
More accessibility, audio, control, and interface improvements are included too, along with expanded colorblind options and Steam Deck settings. These will be further detailed on a Steam post before launch. The Director's Cut represents the end of post-launch support on PC, so it's a pretty big sendoff.
If you're wondering whether the game is worth diving into, GameSpot's review scored it an 8/10. Reviewer Richard Wakeling called it "an excellent RPG, with varied and mostly well-defined characters, a fully realized setting encompassed by insurmountable depth, and an endlessly captivating narrative that offers myriad ways to maneuver through its fantastic twists and turns." Sounds like a ride worth taking—especially with all this new stuff.
So, will you be jumping back into Zero Parades for the Director's Cut? Or are you waiting for that PS5 version? Let us know in the comments!
