Were you hoping to sneak through Seattle with a friend in The Last of Us 2? Well, we've got some bad news that hits harder than a Clicker in the dark. The fan-made multiplayer mod for The Last of Us 2 has been officially cancelled by its creator, Speclizer, after Sony issued a request.
If you missed it, Speclizer had been working on a mod that would bring multiplayer to The Last of Us 2. The project wasn't an official Naughty Dog release, but it had caught the attention of fans who were still craving the multiplayer mode that never came to the sequel. Unfortunately, that dream has now been squashed.
According to the source, Speclizer cancelled the mod after Sony issued a 'request'. The exact nature of that request hasn't been detailed, but it was enough to put the brakes on the entire project. We don't know if it was a cease and desist or a more informal ask, but either way, the mod is no more.
This isn't the first time a fan project has been shut down by a major publisher, and it probably won't be the last. Sony has a track record of protecting its intellectual property, and The Last of Us is one of its biggest franchises. So while it's a bummer for fans, it's not exactly shocking.
For those who were looking forward to playing The Last of Us 2 with friends, this is a tough pill to swallow. The original game's multiplayer mode, Factions, was a beloved part of the first game, and many hoped it would return in some form. The sequel famously launched without any multiplayer, and a standalone multiplayer game set in The Last of Us universe was reportedly in development but has since been shelved.
So what does this mean for you? If you were holding out hope for a fan-made solution to scratch that multiplayer itch, it's time to let that go. The mod is cancelled, and there's no indication that it will be revived. Your best bet for multiplayer in The Last of Us universe might be to revisit the first game's Factions mode, or wait and see if Naughty Dog ever decides to revisit the idea officially.
It's always sad to see fan projects get shut down, especially when they're filling a gap that official releases have left open. But at the end of the day, publishers have to protect their brands. We'll keep you posted if anything changes, but for now, it looks like this mod is dead and buried.
What do you think about Sony's request to cancel the mod? Were you looking forward to playing it? Let us know in the comments.
