Palworld Lead: Survival Games Have Finally Found Their Stride

Remember when it felt like every other survival game was just another Rust or The Forest clone? According to one of the key minds behind Palworld, those days are officially behind us. John 'Bucky' Buckley, head of publishing and communications at Pocketpair, took to Twitter to celebrate what he calls a massive year for the genre, and honestly, he's got a point.

"What a year for survival gaming," Buckley wrote. "Valheim, Dragonwilds, Enshrouded, Dune, Core Keeper, Terraria! What was once a genre that was plagued with 100 hit or miss games a year has really found its stride." That's a pretty strong lineup, and each game brings something different to the table. Valheim, the Viking-themed resource-gathering and base-building hit, finally hit 1.0 this year and keeps growing. Dune: Awakening takes those survival ideas to Arrakis, letting you ride sandworms if that's on your bucket list. It just landed on PS5 earlier this week, too.

Then there's RuneScape: Dragonwilds, an exciting offshoot of the beloved MMO, and Enshrouded, which mixes in action RPG elements for players who want a bit more combat with their crafting. Core Keeper and Terraria round out the list with retro-style approaches. And can we talk about Terraria? The game simply refuses to die. Multiple 'final updates' later, its community keeps expanding, and more power to everyone involved.

Buckley also gave a nod to Palworld itself, because at this point it's one of the dominant forces in the genre. In the replies, he admitted he forgot about Windrose, the pirate-themed survival twist that launched in the first half of the year to a rousing reception. Fun fact: Windrose is actually published by Pocketpair too. So yeah, they're having a pretty good year.

The bigger takeaway here is how much the survival genre has evolved. Gone are the days when every release felt like a shallow riff on the same two games. Now you've got Viking mythology, sci-fi deserts, action RPG hybrids, retro pixel adventures, and pirate shenanigans all thriving side by side. Buckley says he's "extremely excited to see where the genre goes from here," and given the momentum, it's hard not to share that enthusiasm.

For players, this means more choice than ever. Whether you want to build a longship, tame a sandworm, or dig through procedurally generated caves, there's a survival game tailored to your vibe. The genre isn't just surviving anymore. It's thriving.

What's your go-to survival game right now? Are you team Valheim, team Dune, or still lost in Terraria? Let us know!
